What is the relation between economics and globalization?

Economic globalization is going along continuously. Globalization causes various changes. Globalization appeared in politics, culture, society, and others. Today, I'll talk about the economic globalization.

I think that economic globalization's first step is export. South Korea, until now, has been high class in semiconductor, shipbuilding, smart phone, and others. Especially, Samsung is one of major company that contributed to the growth of the Korean economy.

Economic globalization has pros and cons. Like everything else, pros and cons exist at the same time. First of all, effectiveness will increase and economic innovation will also cause. So, globalization make a difference to Korean economy. Market will expand gradually because free competition increases more and more. Price also will be stable. Development of major companies and other companies causes to economic stability. These are all advantages of economic globalization. There are weakness too. The gap between major company and small company bring up social inequality. It causes to the gulf between rich and poor. The gulf between rich and poor is the situation that can destroy our society. Now that globalization is intensifying, there are many part-time jobs, unemployment problem, and finding employment problem. Underemployment like a non-regular worker is also big problem. Our economic society problems are all weakness of economic globalization.

In the world, we can see the globalization of economy. A good example of this is  the 'WTO'. WTO is the world trade organization. WTO is an international organization for the purpose of global economic growth through trade liberalization. In other words, the organization establishes the fundamental provision, administrates, and observes that principle. Economic organization was formed like the WTO, globalization of economy is growing up rapidly. However, these organization will be weakness for developing countries. Trade is activated, the reliance between the countries becomes high. But developing countries have specific limitations of natural resources and labor. So they rely on advanced civilization. They can't upgrade their techniques. Then, developing countries cannot help making a deal with an inequality condition.

How to protect developing countries? Globalization of economy has not only advantages. What is the way that can conquer the weakness of economic globalization?

Downside of China's economic growth

China's economy has been raised rapidly. In the background, there were a number of people. Population is the most important element. China can easily get labor force into cheap price.

Now, China's average economic growth rate approach around 10%. It is actually surprising numerical value. World economy is affected by economic indicators of China. But from a longer perspective, China's economy has many problems.

First, domestic needs is weak compared to exports. It is came from income-gap between low income class and high income class and weakness of social security.

second, According to the book, China's economy stand on the edge of precipice, there are many uncompetitive companies,
State-owned enterprises monopolize the market but they have not made a profit,
Communication companies maintain lower service, call quality but they appropriate expensive charge. And China have too many rules and regulations. High taxes is typical.

More than all, Chinese pride is really high. It is very dangerous thinking like western nations did. Pride can be driving force but it can be poison.

I think that China can be the top 2 with United States.
Can they do replace the strongest nation? I don't know well.
China's economic growth is these days hot issue.
It is worth watching the change of the balance of power in world economy.

Do you agree or disagree with the sentence 'Modern world is more peaceful and less violent'?

To conclude, I don't believe that modern society is more peaceful and less violent.
The more world progress, the more we are exposed to risk elements such as crime, drug and poverty, something like that,

I accept, of course, TED's opinion.
As time passed, people recognized respect for life and each individual got basic human right. As a result society naturally evolved into a more peaceful place.

But, modern society have many kind of digital devices, technology and so on.
So people can easily contact unhealthy contents.
Especially, the power of internet is very influential. You can buy a dangerous drug or a gun or adult goods, if you put your mind to it.

Therefore, we have to remember that modern society is still dangerous
and we have to be careful when we act or when we collect any information.

What is the relation between culture and globalization?

Now you can see anywhere in the global culture. Global language, food, lifestyle, leisure, and so on exist everywhere. They have positive relationship each other, but they also have negative relationship each other.

First, positive relation. Nowadays, cultural exchanges are increasing between state and nation. They can understand each other, so mutual understanding increases. The wider mutual understanding is, the more various culture is. Because culture can fusion. This happening cause mitigation of heterogeneity and composition of the consensus. Therefore, dissension between nation and nation decreases and the intersection occurs between peoples. Soon, it raises the global integration. Diversity. And people who can accept diversity. I think it is important factor between globalization and culture.

It is a K-POP Concert. The concert held open to many country, Sometimes, more than 15,000 k-pop fans in the U.S. enjoyed this concert. It showed k-pop's growing popularity overseas.

Second, negative relation. The global integration have destructive nature. The cultural acceptance is a good thing. But the unconditional acceptance can destroy indigenous culture. Tradition can easily collapse. People want new, western, and unique things. So they quickly forgot their own things. This is bad situation. This is a result of absorbing other cultures without filtration. It can bring destruction of previously inherent basic order of the state and nation. So, when people accept the global culture, they should be careful and avoid the unconditional acceptance.

People enjoyed fatty food that came from Western country. But these foods can injure our health and become more obese.

I think global cultures are a double-edged sword. But we can't remove them. We have no choice but to accept globalization of culture. We have to correct about unconditional acceptance and do not forget our own culture. This is a solution about globalization's problem. What do you think?

What is the relation between globalization and culture ?

Globalization is the increasing intermixing between countries throughout the world. This is happening in many diferent ways. Like economic relations, business relations, political relations. But also it's happening at more personal individual levels more and more with easy and available information sharing like youtube or even travel.

Although there is increased interdependency and intermixing between societies throughout the world, not all these societies value and believe the same thing. Their culture is completely different. This can create tensions between countries that may be reliant on each other economically, or trying to maintain some kind of political peace. Also a lot of criticisms of globalization are that it actually pertains to global westernization which means that American or Western European beliefs and values are being the most weigh in the balance between cultures.

What is the relation between culture and globalization?

First, globalization make a fusion of cultures. Today, the contact of many cultures made a big impact. If we do not have a information technology and trasportation system, this situation is impossible. Not only human and resources, but also a information technology and trasportation system  are conveying culture and ideal now.
Due to Globalization, there are many emigrations and imigrations. For example, Immigrants from Asia settled down America and they married American. but they didn't throw away their culture. So Asian culture and American culture are in harmony. after all , their children has a blending of cultures.
Second, globalization can make a culture expand over the surrounding country. Long time ago, it is hard to inform our culture. In globalization, we can spread our culture easily. Thanks to UTUBE, Psy can be a world famous star. and thanks to psy, Korean drinking culture and food Culture spread a world quickly.
Finally, The global culture  is local culture. In globalization, local cultures are primarily meant to give the identity. It will not be a global culture when all of societies have a same culture, Point is that global culture should be recognized and reflected in the uniqueness of the country and the remediation of each society.

So, Globalization and culture may be embodied as an economic and cultural dependency and actively accepting liberal, democratic, egalitarian and universal human enlightenment.

What is the relation between culture and globalization?

Culture is that the behavior of the people that have been accumulated from the past appears in unique figure of each region or country. Culture becomes symbol of the country, for example symbol of Korea are Hangul(Korean alphabet), Hanbok(Korean traditional clothes), Makgeolli , psy, K-pop etc. And symbols can be nonmaterial. For example Korea’s founding principle is humanitarianism. The major elements of culture are values, beliefs, and norms.

First, ‘Value’ are the most high level’s moral principle. Secondly, ‘Belief’ are agreement about proper behaviors in particular situation. And finally, ‘Norms’ are real behaviors. Norms are different each country. But values are similar to each country. All cultures contain values.

Advances in science and technology have helped backdrop of globalization. They also helped communication between countries as well as within one country. International organizations was founded, they discuss the problem of environment, war, hunger and disease. Globalization is a multidimensional phenomenon that complexly occurs in the economy, politics, and culture in combination.

Western society becomes economically powerful nations, and other countries has been trying to follow their appearance. A society having own unique culture is influenced by western society. And many things such as diet, leisure, economy, and education are changed from the traditional lifestyle to the west style. (Westernization) If these phenomenons continue to persist, cultural assimilation can be happen. cultural assimilation is that their own unique culture is lose by a dominant cultural group. Because 'culture' is related to the real behavior of people, historically, the ruling class had used culture in order to dominate the controlled class. (during the period of Japanese colonial rule, force to use japanese instead of hangul. Also Japan aggressively push Koreans to assimilate to Japanese culture under ‘the Naeseon Ilche’ or 'Korea and Japan are One' policy.)

Our body is in a country but we can go around the world through smart phone or internet. The more Globalization progresses, the boundaries between countries become blurry. Actually in around, we can often see people who married foreigner and then are living in foreign country. (TV program ‘Love In Asia’ is about multi-cultural family. and ‘Non-Summit’비정상회담 is a talk show with eleven non-Korean men, living in Korea.)

The more Globalization progresses, there is concern about some culture will be disappear. But in my thought, to disappear a culture is not easy. If some people follow the western culture, while some people also exist trying to defend our culture. Therefore, it is important to respect and understand the culture of each country.

What I have thought about Clay Shirky Cognitive Surplus

Accessing to the internet has spread we have become connected to each other in ways. We can now produce, learn, connect, share, and shop online. This connection has freed us from simply consuming contents to being able to participate and contribute to it in larger groups. Shirky’s Cognitive Surplus is about how and why we can put to better use our collected free time by connecting and participating in new ways for the public goods.

I want to mention that we are becoming one and another’s infrastructure. As a group becomes larger, things which were previously unlike can become likely. For example, in city it’s possible that at any time, someone will want to buy a slice of pizza. As a result, pizza companies can afford to make pizzas in advance and sell them by the slice, and is confident that there will be demand for them. On the other hand, in a rural area the demand for pizza slices is very low. This things happen when individual needs which can only shows as a crowd grows and in larger crowds it’s more likely that someone somewhere in the group will be able to meet those needs. The internet of course ables us to form much larger and diverse crowds never before. So we can rely on a wider group of people. Both online and offline to meet our various needs.

So, I've thought about we are becoming each others infrastructure. These days, we can see and hear real time updates from those who are on the ground, living it minute by minute. With our mobile phones and computers we can share with millions of people what’s going on around them as it happens.

Cognitive Surplus

I saw a 'TED' speech about Cognitive Surplus. In modern society, a couch potato is not only consumption of leisure time because computer and internet have propagated rapidly. We can spend our leisure time by using the computer and internet. But people have not only egoistic mind but also have altruistic mind. So they produce something and share that with others. And the 'something' is cognitive surplus.

Everyone has talent and time to spare. I think cognitive surplus was made to talent, time to spare and technology. (Technology means development like an internet.) If so, cognitive surplus exist to me! I have three factors of cognitive surplus. For example, I can treat photoshop program of Adobe. And if I made Peter professor's introduction poster, that would be a cognitive surplus like a lol cat picture.

Many people create value with cognitive surplus, but I think it is very small parts of internet users. There are small in number of positive created value in comparison with internet users. How can we promote people who have talent, time to spare, and technology to produce cognitive surplus?

After watching Shirky's speech...

At first, I was surprised at the concept of 'Cognitive Surplus'.
I never thought about that kind of thing.

Cognitive surplus is very simple but it is very important. I agree with his opinion.
We can change the world through this way.
SNS, one kind of new media is typical example.
As I said in last class if I lost important thing, we could ask SNS such as facebook for help. Than many people who had seen your helping message will do what they can for you.

The scene that a nursery's rule was broken by extra change was strongly impressed on my memory. Because I thought opposite result:-)
And when Shirky said the difference between to practice and not so, I was very sympathetic.

All human beings have selfishness and altruism.
We should try to altruistic in order to contribute to the growth.

How about you? can you agree my opinion?

What is Globalization?

1. Summary

Globalization has many definitions. It can be simple or complicated.
In generally, Globalization is classified three parts : Cultural / Political / Economic.

First part is Cultural Globalization.
It can say the spread of symbol, ideas and ideologies.
All part of world affect and affected each country's culture by media.
For example, Korea being changed through the influence of Westernization.
And Chinese and Japanese like Korean food, TV star, beauty style and so on
by Korean Wave's influence.

Second part is Political Globalization.
This means the change of a way of negotiations between two (or mere) countries.
The negotiation was aggressive and oppressive only a few decades ago.
However, these days it is attempted to resolve diplomatic way.
UN is a representative organization of the political globalization.

The last part is Economic Globalization.
It contains trade, investment, financial flows.
We can easily understand by thinking some multinational corporations.
This part is particularly noticeable in today's economy.

2. Mention

I am interested in the subject of Globalization.
So, I could study very pleasantly.
Especially, when we talked about 'Economic Globalization' part, I was very sympathetic to the contents of prezi. Because, I usually thought so too.
Through this lecture, I tried to define Economic Globalization by my own word.

3. Discussion

I want to ask you about <Does Globalization have equal power between positive side and negative side?>.

I think it's never no.
Many students say 'Globalization is double-edged sword.' I could not agree more with them.

In my opinion, Globalization has negative power more than positive power.
Because, We can easily see not individuality but standardization from many parts of life. We are in the middle of rapid change. Therefore, we have to establish a definite independence in order to protect identity.
If not, you and I will disappear without a trace. (Even our nation.)

What is Globalization?

Globalization is a difficult term to define because it has come to mean so many things. In general, globalization refers to the trend toward countries joining together economically, through education, society and politics, and viewing themselves not only through their national identity but also as part of the world as a whole. Globalization is said to bring people of all nations closer together, especially through a common medium like the economy or the Internet.

In our world, there are few places a person can’t get to within a day of travel, and few people a person can’t reach via telephone or Internet. Because of modern modes of travel and communication, citizens of a nation are more conscious of the world at large and may be influenced by other cultures in a variety of ways. Time and space matter less, and even language barriers are being overcome as people all over the world communicate through trade, social Internet forums, various media sources, and a variety of other ways.

What is Globalization?

Summary
Globalization progressed inevitably. And consciousness about globalization more spreads. It progress aspects of political, economical, social and cultural.
Concerns about environment  is growing and it becomes part of contemporary human culture.
With globalization, glocalization also happens. It is pursuit globalization, but respect local's natural features.

Mention

I thought Globalization is both of integration and diversification.

For example, we can using dollar in countries which do not use the dollar because dollar is  internationally accepted currency.
And we sharing information all over the world like wikipedia. If we can read English, we can obtain large amount of information.

And since the development of telecommunications and transportation, mobility of the population is increased. Not only population, but also resource and culture are transfered.
We can travel or working other countries. So, almost every countries can see foreigners
and living together. It promotes diversity in one country and all over the world.

Discussion
I want to question about Expansion of globalization.
Indeed, Globalization continues to accelerate? If not, why?

What is globalization?

What is globalization?

1. Summary
Nowadays, people easily said ‘Globalization’ in their society. The word ‘Globalization’ was used for sociology, economics, politics, and cultural anthropology term in 1980’s. After the Cold War, information, transportation, and communication are developed drastically. So material, money, information, and people come and go borderless. Eventually, global has gone unity and globality. We wouldn’t think about this happen in past time. In the past, people didn’t think that SF movie was realized. Similiarly, people wouldn’t think about borderless society. In a sense, globalization is very positive phenomenon. But, everything has a double-edged sword. Globalization also goes for a double-edged sword. It simplified all over the world. Therefore, minority races, cultures, and languages fade out. I think that these problems are our assignment. More borderless world did , more higher our consciousness is. (We must do it.)

2. Mention
I’m very interested in globalization’s role. As mentioned above, everything has a double-edged sword. Globalization is the same. There are positive phenomenon and negative phenomenon. Two attributes coexist in our society. I wonder which attribute attains superiority. positive phenomenon? Or negative phenomenon? Does it have equal power? To solve this problem, I have to research globalization more.

3. Discussion

I think that the problem is egoism in the midst of community spirit. Advanced countries lead the world advantageously for themselves. This is a big problem. I think they are very greedy. What do you think? Is it really greedy? Or is it just an inevitable happen? Do we solve the problems of globalization? I wonder all these things! Thank you.

The Economist Review

After I receive 'The Economist' for professor, I don't know what to do. So, before I read that, I want to search the information about this magazine. The Economist was weekly magazine that was published in London in 1843. Like a title, 'The Economist' wrote article about world economy and politics criticism. Even though this magazine consisted of English, I guess Korean people pretty subscribed this magazine. But, the article's level was a little high. So, the age group of Korean people that read the magazine was also a little high. ( I guess it is the 40~50 age band.) In Korea, the magazine about politics problem existed. But Korean magazine wasn't evaluated like 'The Economist' because the magazine's politic tendency was definite.
Total 95 pages of The Economist have a lot of country's story. Among them, Korean article was also published. 2013.10.5th 'The Economist' said, 'Monkey Business' happened in Buddhism in South Korea. Last time, the venerable Ja-seung getting engulfed in immorality make no bones about telling a lie. He said he didn't candidacy but he ran for candidate. And he was elected. I don't know a detailed account , however, it is certainly shameful article. I know that Korean Buddhism have severe corruption. I want to eradicate corruption of Buddhism.

Blog assignment 1 - What is globalization

Globalization is likely to be a hot potato for this century because of its controversial issues which are mainly because different groups interpret it in different ways. One says globalization is the start of “The Great Disruption”. The other says that this is all part of “The Big Shifts".

Globalization is inevitable and its effects have both positive and negative consequences. The good parts about globalization,  first, it improves people’s lives. Second, it breaks down barriers to democracy and trade. Third, it resolves tensions between country adversaries. Last, it gives empowerment people more and more. Even though we did not intend these, globalization brought its negative consequences. First, it is harmful for the well-being of certain groups. Second, globalization can destroy cultural identity and sovereignty of countries. Third, it brings disparities among people. Last, it brings pollution of the environment. And these latent dysfunctions of globalization cause anti-globalization.

The rich people are getting richer and the big corporations are making profits. As a result, small percentage of the world’s population own nearly half of global household wealth. Meanwhile, most people, including middle class are getting worse. The environment is getting more and more damaged. Also they have fear that globalization threatens the environment as well as national cultures.

What is Globalization?

Nowadays, we are always able to communicate with people around the world with the internet and SNS(Social Network Service). We can also buy goods directly from foreign sites and get that stuff at home. This is because we are living in the age of globalization. But the meaning of globalization is not simple like that. The meaning of globalization is much more complex and difficult. So far, I simply thought that globalization is to be able to communicate with people around the world. But after reading 'What Is Globalization?', my thought was changed. The true significance of globalization cannot be defined in a word.
In 'What Is Globalization?', Velho saw globalization as perspective of one which view the world. According to Velho, globalization is moving together. Globalization started from economic, it is gradually expanding the area to politics, society, and culture. Globalization brought significant meaning at economic life of each nation.
If globalization means that the world unite, and it is possible to constitute a whole by a group with a strong force, would not intentionally used the globalization? For example, in the past it was ideology or conquest, in the present it seems capital or information. In the risk of negative globalization, how should we look at the globalization?

What is globalization?

What is globalization?
1. Globalization is increasing global connectivity and increasing an idea that the world is one and I’m the person of the world not only of my country. 2. Globalization should focus on 4 things, is same founding purpose of U.N. (United Nations organization). The 4 things are nation-states, world politics, individuals, and human right. Actually I don’t understand clearly this part about UN so I’d like to reference another friend’s posting. 3. Globalization is consisted of 4 dimensions: culture, economy, social, and politic. Those dimensions are give and take influence complexly. So that’s why we can’t explain definitely separated facet of globalization.
The history of globalization is long. Since started trade in 13century or more long time ago, globalization has processing. Globalization is inevitable owing to human nature such as desire of conquer, curious. And that combined with internet and other high technology, the world looks like already reached perfect globalization. In this situation, despite of many dark side of globalization, critical analyses of globalization are inappropriate. We should find the way much more people in the world get a benefit of globalization. After finish this class, I’m expecting to have an answer that how can we make positive globalization.

World system theory
This theory is explanation about unequal trade relation between core country and periphery country.  After globalization, the gap between the rich and poor was more extreme. I always wonder why, and this theory gives me an idea why globalization makes bigger gap.
It reminds me some scene of documentary I’ve seen. African workers are eating chocolates first time in their life. They said they pick lots of cacao bean, and make thousand chocolate every day. But they never knew the taste of the chocolate. Some of them were crying.
Natural resources are exploited thoughtlessly by core countries. And African workers take cheap pay. They might be satisfied with small money that makes them don’t need to starve anymore. But actually it’s unfair because they can’t even think of buying a chocolate. After they spent all of money and lose labor because of ill or old, they have nothing. In country also if they spent all natural resources like cacao bean, they are becoming more poor country. Contrastively, core countries are going to be rich more by using unfair profits.

Globalization is helpful to diverse of culture?
After globalization, we can easily get a many of culture from diverse country. But I’d like to focus on relation of power in Spread of culture. I think spread of culture is also under relation of power. In other words, the culture is spread to poor country from rich country.
Everyone wants to follow what stylish people do. For example, we put in wish list a sunglass that popular in America but we don’t think that wearing a sun cover some making of leaf popular in Africa is looks cool. I think it makes get rid of poor country’s culture. We already lose our traditional fashion because when people encounter western fashion it was not stylish anymore.
Recently I felt wired when I saw some TV program. It was about the project that making Korea traditional food to global food. People were having a discussion how to make global people like Bibim-bob. Their answer was let’s make more sweet and not spicy. I thought it’s only for western people not for global. If they consider to global, they could add some special spice for Indian, or Thailander. Or they could make hotter for Mexican.
I’m concern that we are going to lose diverse culture and everyone in global world dress like Hollywood star, and eat like western people.

(Extra blogging) Differences in movie posters

I searched movie posters that I saw.  It is definitely true that Korea movie posters are emphasized characters in many Korean posters. But I thought It can be  influenced by the awareness of actors. And I thought three movie posters in Korea are more express movie's plot and atmosphere by actor's facial expressions. (especially, The korea poster of 'Way back home' is express the movie's topic, 'Family' )

And American movie, Black swan have big differences in posters. I thought American poster more arouse sesivility and imagination.

There are relativity in culture so these differences are revealed.

'What Is Globalization?'

After reading 'What is globalization?', I think it is really difficult to understand for me. But, I tried to read a article carefully and I choose a one word. Globalization is 'evolution'. Not only consensus, it has a mix of culture, economy, politics and direction. It is also different from internationalization. Roland Robertson was a first person who mentioned a globalization in 1500.
The reason why I answered the question like that is globalization is necessary in human life. If we deny a globalization, we will be destroyed by ourselves. Evolution is also same with it. It is associated with survival. I already knew there are many bad situation about globalization. Like  Imperialism of culture, Gap between rich and poor..
Think about that. our resources, capitals and workforce had been limited because of area. In the past, they were not threats. But today, we already shared everything. If we cannot share them, we cannot survive. So, In order to survive, we made a gloabalization.

Glocalization of movie posters

Glocalization can be seen everywhere. For example, bulgogi pizza is only sold in Korea but it's just a pizza that we can see in the whole county. Bulgogi is Korean traditional food, so Western food combined to Korean food.

I think that this phenomenon was found in movie poster. When Korean movies are exported, movie posters are changed entirely. They contain movie's main story or movie's mood. On the other hand, Korean people set a high value on actor. When they choose a movie, they consider actors face. So, Korean movie company changes posters of  Western movie and emphasizes actors face.

This is Korean movie posters that was exported to other country.
Left is original Korean movie poster and Right is exported.

Like this, all of Korean movie posters emphasized the hero's face.
This is also an example of poster change.
Left is Western movie poster and Right is imported.

Even, movie title was changed.
Argentine movie 'medianeras' means 'sidewalls' that signifies construction terms.
But when the movie imported Korean, the movie title changed 'probability that falling in love in Buenos Aires.'

This is very interesting change in film company. I wish that they don't change posters title or image. That can make confusion to people who choose the movie.

Review of 'The Economist'

I read an article about what does people think about world cup in Brazil. The article discuss about Brasil is not prepared to held a world cup, because they don't have much hospital, education and structure. People don't have much to wear, to eat, and getting a job. Anyway normally Brazil People think they are poor people. I like football but people need more structure to live than world cup.

As Brazil prepares to host the 2014 World Cup, violence, drugs, prostitution and the lack of structure makes the children to search the streets as an alternative. The Brazil is not a poor country but one thing sure that is extremely unequal. It means contains a very large number of poor people. I really think Brazil World cup was easy to disorientate and confuse the people.

what do others can tell about it ? give me your opinion.

Review of 'The economist'

I read about people's think about economy overall the world. I was pleasure at investors are optimistic about global economic expansion in 2013. But problems of structure, unsustainable dept and inadequate infrastructure are obstacles of economic growing.

I thought this problems are inevitable. Because it happened in different economic growth between countries.

And I was interested article about South Korea and United States. It featured first meeting presidents in Korea and United States. I already known U.S and Korea have close but complex relationship after Korea war.

And after read the article, two countries have to deal with the situation that North Korea's move wisely. And Also, Korea have to escape outstretched leadership of US about Korea's internal political situation.

Course syllabus

Our syllabus is still subject to change. The most recent version will be linked here: view or download

Introduction to the blog

This blog is a digital forum where students from Fall 2014 class in Sociology of Globalization at the Hanyang University in Korea will discuss their weekly readings and activities.

For each section of the course you are expected to post a a blog post on relevant readings on our blog here and make a comment on another student's post.

An ideal commentary should be about 800 words, divided intro three clearly labeled sections in which you: 1) summarize in your own words of materials you read; 2) mention of any new, interesting, or unusual items learned; 3) identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more. This question is likely to be incorporated into our class discussions. You are allowed to quote interesting passage from the text(s) you've read, but the quotes will not count toward any length requirements.

Blog’s deadline is always: Sunday, midnight, of the week the question is posted.
Remember: in addition to the blog post you should also make at least one constructive comment about another student's blog post. Note the word “constructive”. Just posting “I agree” or such will NOT be counted.

Late posts and comments will NOT be accepted. Nothing stops you from doing them IN ADVANCE if you think you may be busy in the upcoming week. As an exception, students who have joined the class after we have started will be allowed to make up late blog postings up to the first week after the add/drop period ends. Add the note “LATE POSTING - ADDED” to such posts and inform me that you are doing so in order to make sure I don't discard your blogs as late.

Note that for this assignment you will need to create a Google Account (https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount). Each student will receive an emailed invite to join the blog and become its co-author. You have to accept it before you will be able to post.

Also note that unless you configure your account to do so automatically you will need to sign your blog posts with at least with your first name and initial – so I know who is posting (you can set up your username to do so automatically). Unsigned blog posts will not be graded. Also, add a label to each of your blog based on your name and initial (so for me that would be Piotr K), this will make it easy for you and me to quickly find all of your blogs (how to label a post).

Here is an example of an excellent blog post (structure, content), although note this blog is on the longer side (about 800 words). You are not required to write so much, although if you do, you may receive extra credit.
